Position of Venus: Venus always within 48 degrees of Sun. Venus is in Purvabhadra Uttarabhadra Junction. So Sun can't be in Vrischika. It can't be Kartika month. It can be Magha, Phalguni, Chaitra, Vaisakha months.

Position of Mars: Mars was retrogressing in Vrischika. If Mars is retrogressing in Vrischika Sun can't be in Vrischika. It indicates Chitra,  Phalguni, Chaitra, Vaisakha months.

Position of Rahu: Rahu has been indicated as it was in Kartika star and approaching Sun and Moon. Sun and Moon were in Rohini star. Hence This indicates Vaisakha month.

Position of Ketu: Ketu was told as at Jyeshta Star.  This position is correct as per Rahu's position and Eclipse would occur if Rahu-Ketu align with Sun and Moon astrologically.

Balarama's Pilgrimage:  

Start day Pushya star. Not Possible.

Broken Comet

So The Shravan starred day eclipse didn't occured because of Moon covering the Sun. But it was a rare Phenomenon of Comet bursts.

Yes The following verses explain a comet burst. None of them would explain the following verses fully.

In both the twilights, prior and posterior, I daily behold, O Bharata, the Sun during his rising and setting to be covered by headless trunks.

Tri-coloured clouds with their extremities white and red and necks black, charged with lightning, and resembling maces (in figure) envelope the Sun in both twilights.

I have seen the sun, the Moon, and the stars to be all blazing. No difference in their aspect is to be noted in the evening. I have seen this all day and all night. 

All this forebodes fear. On even the fifteenth night of the lighted-fortnight in (the month of) Kartika, the Moon, divested of splendour, became invisible, or of the hue of fire, the firmament being of the hue of the lotus.

They would happily try to explain that verse 23 indicates that there was an eclipse happened on Kartika month Purnima. So moon was seen as Red in colour.

One thing we all forget is Vyasa is well understands the Lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipse is a common phenomenon and he says it also in another verse also

The constellations are divided into three classes. Upon one or another of each class, a planet of evil omen has shed its influence, foreboding terrible dangers. 

A lunar fortnight had hitherto consisted of fourteen days, or fifteen days (as usual), or sixteen days. This, however, I never knew that the day of New-Moon would be on the thirteenth day from the first lunation, or the day of Full-Moon on the thirteenth day from the same. 

And yet in course of the same month both the Moon and the Sun have undergone Eclipses on the thirteenth days from the day of the first lunation. The Sun and the Moon therefore, by undergoing Eclipses on unusual days.

Here Vyasa clearly talks about eclipse. So the previous one he told Red Moon is not the effect of Eclipse. that is some thing else.

The verse claiming that he could see Sun in the night also some times, Moon in day and night and stars also several day times clearly indicates that the thinks are not Normal.

On 14th day evening after Sun is set, again it was visible in Sky enabling Jeyatrata Killing.

On 18th day on a no Eclipse day Sun was eclipsed.

So there was a Rare Phenomenon of Second Sun / Moon is hiding here. Is is possible? 

Though it is not imaginable, it is scientifically possible. We have enough scientific events recorded to show it is possible, For that, Udyoga Parva (Karna-Krishna talks) and Bhishma Parva (Vyasa -Dhritarashtra  conversation, Planet position when 1st day war started), Shalya Parva (Bhima - Duryodhana Mace war) Drona Parva (Jayadratha killing, 14th night events), Karna Parva (Planet positions when 17th day war started and Ended) can be explained by this only.

Rahu-Ketu and Eclipses 

Sun and Moon are the two large objects we regularly see on our skyline. Earth coming around Sun in an elliptical path. Moon comes around Earth in elliptical path.

A Lunar Eclipse happens when the Earth, Sun and Moon align in space, with Earth in between the Sun and Moon. At such times, Earth’s shadow falls on the Full-Moon causing a Lunar Eclipse.

A Solar Eclipse happens at the opposite phase of the Moon  New-Moon when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. 

Why there aren’t Eclipses at every Full and New-Moon?

The Moon takes about a month to orbit around the Earth. If the Moon orbited in the same plane as the Earth’s eclipticorbital plane, we would have two Eclipses every month. 

However, the Moon’s orbit is inclined to Earth’s orbit by about 5°. Twice a month the Moon intersects the ecliptic – Earth’s orbital plane at points called nodes. If the Moon is going from south to north in its orbit, it has called an ascending node.If the Moon is going from north to south, it is a descending node. If the Full-Moon or New-Moon is appreciably close to one of these nodes, then an Eclipse is not only possible, but also inevitable.

The ascending node is called as Rahu, and the descending node is called as Ketu in Indian astrology. Rahu and Ketu are fittingly named as shadow planets, as these nodal points are shadows of Earth and Moon.

Though Sun is very big and Moon very small comparatively, their distance from Earth also very different. Moon is approximately at 4 lakhs Km distance from Earth and Sun is at 15 crore Km. Hence approximately both will be seen as similar in size from Earth.

Because the orbital plane of the Moon precesses in space, the lunar nodes (Rahu & Ketu) also precess around the ecliptic, completing one revolution (called a draconic or nodal period) in 18.612958 years. These nodes travel in the opposite direction of other planet movements.  

A Lunar Eclipse can occur only when the Moon is near (within 11° 38' ecliptic longitude) either lunar node (Rahu & Ketu) and during a Full-Moon. In Hindu astrology, the Lunar Eclipse occurs when Sun is near to Rahu or Ketu and Moon crossing the other shadow planet. 

Rahu grahasta Lunar Eclipse: Sun would be in Ketu node. In addition, when Moon crosses the Rahu node Eclipse will occur.

Ketu grahasta Lunar Eclipse: Sun would be in Rahu node. In addition, when Moon crosses the Ketu node Eclipse will occur.

A Solar Eclipse can occur only when the Moon is near (within 17° 25') either lunar node during a New-Moon.

Rahu Grahasta Solar Eclipse: Sun would be in Rahu node. In addition, when Moon crosses the Rahu node Eclipse will occur.

Ketu Grahasta Solar Eclipse: Sun would be in Ketu node. In addition, when Moon crosses the Ketu node Eclipse will occur.

During lots of months Sun and Moon don’t align with Rahu and Ketu during New-Moon and Full-Moon days. Those Amavasya and, Purnima days Eclipses won’t occur.

A better representation of Sun-Earth-Moon view could give a better understanding of above illustration. 

Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu have an orbital cycle of ~18 years and are always 180° from each other. The precessional orbit of Moon has approximately 18-year rotational cycle of the lunar ascending and descending nodes on the Earth’s ecliptic plane. This also corresponds to a saros, a period of ~223 synodic months (18 years, 11 days, 8 hours), that can be used to predict Eclipses of the Sun and Moon.

Often during Sanskrit to English translation, scholars mistake Ketu as Neptune. However, Neptune is not visible to the naked eye and its discovery is attributed to the use of high-resolution telescopes in modern astronomy. Here in Mahabharat also Vyasa describes Ketu as “śyāmo grahaḥ dhūmaḥ saha” i.e “The black planet, blazing up like fire mixed with smoke”.
